We had a good listen to Beyoncé and Donald Glover’s version of ‘Can You Feel the Love Tonight?’ from the latest trailer for Disney’s ‘The Lion King’ – and here are our thoughts…

A new teaser clip from Disney’s live-action remake of The Lion King has arrived, featuring Beyoncé and Donald Glover’s much-anticipated version of Elton John’s uplifting ballad, ‘Can You Feel the Love Tonight?’.

The trailer is narrated by Mufasa, who says: “Look at the stars, the great kings look down on us from those stars. And so will I.”

But what about Bey and Donald’s vocals? Let’s have a look line by line…

‘Can you feel the love tonight?’

Their duet marks that pivotal cry-into-a-cushion moment in The Lion King when Simba and Nala have just been reunited and are finally beginning to realise how perfect they are for each other.

As the two lions, Beyoncé and Donald start with lots of breath in their voice, making for a sweet, intimate opening. They take three clear breaks in the middle of the phrase, creating a breathless feeling of new love and excitement.

Then, Bey takes over with a big old ‘Halo’-style ornament on the final word of the phrase. It’s a bit OTT but distinctively Beyoncé – so we’ll let get her away with it.

‘The peace the evening brings’

A lovely, crisp phrase with just the right amount of yearning. By this point, we’re sort of starting to forget the song is meant to be a duet. Donald who?

‘The world, for once, in perfect harmony with all its living things’

The melody line is treated pretty loosely here, with extra ornaments and inflections added on pretty much every word.

It’s super drawn out and breathy, but we love that Queen B (and Donald) put their own spin on it.

We can’t wait to hear more...

The Lion King is out 19 July 2019.
