The grandson of Sir Winston Churchill will present a special Full Works Concert of music and words commemorating Victory in Europe Day and World War II.
Sir Nicholas Soames will present a special Full Works Concert on Classic FM to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day.
Sir Nicholas, who is the grandson of Sir Winston Churchill, will spend the evening playing a selection of music associated with World War II and VE Day together with famous quotes and speeches that his grandfather made around the conflict.
The programme will feature William Walton’s musical depiction of the legendary wartime aircraft, the Spitfire, and a complete performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No.5, which includes the four-note motif famously used for the V for Victory campaign.
The programme will air on Friday 8 May from 8pm to 10pm.
There will also be music from film soundtracks which gave cinematic portrayals of the war, including Michael Kamen’s music for Band of Brothers, John Williams’ haunting score to Schindler’s List and a piece from Steven Spielberg’s war drama Saving Private Ryan.
Performances from a host of internationally renowned orchestras will soundtrack the evening, with recordings from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Moscow Symphony Orchestra, the Central Band of the Royal Air Force and more.
Sir Nicholas will also share his passion for classical music with listeners, as he presents this evening filled with iconic pieces of music and war commemorations not to be missed.
