This second instalment of works by Gabriel Fauré, The Secret Fauré II, was recorded by the Sinfonieorchester Basel under the baton of conductor Ivor Bolton.

The Secret Fauré II gives us a window shop display of his talents as a composer for orchestra. The album features the well-known Pavane, and some longer works, including Ballade for Piano and Orchestra, Élégie for Cello and Orchestra, and Masques et Bergamasques Suite.

Joseph Marx was not only a brilliant composer, but an excellent pianist. The virtuosic writing for piano is a joy on this album, although the solo part of his ‘Romantic Piano Concerto’, is nothing short of a challenge for the pianist himself to play.

Pianist David Lively takes both concertos on the album in his stride, alongside conductor Steven Sloane, and the Bochum Symphony Orchestra. The second concerto, ‘Castelli Romani’, was inspired by ancient ruins in the wooded hills outside Rome, and beautifully captures the essence of the Mediterranean.
