The daily agony of being asked to name your ONE favourite composer

It's the question all classical music fans have to face. We're sure there are die-hard Beethoven fans out there and people for whom Wagner is the final word in opera. But for others this is THE MOST IMPOSSIBLE QUESTION IN THE WORLD and it leaves them in a cold sweat.

They say, 'Oh, you like classical music, do you? So who's your favourite composer?'

And you're like...

And then....

Because what seems an easy question is actually very complicated

"Well, Bach because of his Brandenburg Concertos. But then Handel for his oratorios. Mozart, obviously, is the greatest lyrical genius. Oh, but then there are the late Beethoven quartets…"

And it goes on...

"Oh Brahms – his symphonies are just mind-blowing. I've decided: Brahms is my favourite…

"Second only to Mahler – his are the very best. So. Yeah. Mahler.

"Messiaen's Turangalîla-symphonie, oh that's an all-time favourite. And actually, I really do LOVE Arvo Pärt…"

It can feel a bit

Well, frustrating...
