Raise a glass to freedom: Hamilton is coming to our screens this July on Disney+.
Filmed in 2016 at New York’s Richard Rodgers Theatre, the production stars the entire original Broadway cast including Miranda himself, Leslie Odom Jr, Jonathan Groff, Phillipa Soo and Daveed Diggs.
Screening on Disney+ from 3 July 2020, the production was accelerated from an original October 2021 cinema release, following the birth of Disney’s streaming service and theatre closures due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Guess Miranda wasn’t going to throw away his shot at getting the world obsessed with Hamilton while stuck in quarantine…
The musical, which tells the story of US founding father Alexander Hamilton, won 11 Tony Awards in 2016, as well as the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Since opening in 2015, Broadway’s production has grossed more than $636m and has been seen by 2.6m people.
Prior to lockdown, touring companies are currently in San Francisco and London, with another in Los Angeles that would have started by now. Its hip-hop soundtrack, with nods to classic rap and R&B, is also incredibly popular worldwide, with hundreds of millions of streams for each track on Spotify.
Disney reportedly acquired the rights the 2 hour, 40-minute production for a reported $75m, following a lengthy bidding war with other Hollywood studios.
