Bach’s orchestral suites, or ‘ouvertures’, with multiple dance movements in the French style, were the precusor to the concerto. If you like period-instrument recordings, this album is a must. These Japanese musicians play with such authenticity that I can almost imagine them in 17th-century costume. Their inspiration comes from founder Masaaki Suzuki, who is currently recording Bach’s complete works for harpsichord. His enthusiasm certainly rubs off onto his musicians.
