Bach’s three surviving cantatas for Jubilate Sunday, the third after Easter, are fully understood and articulated by Gardiner in his ‘Bach Pilgrimage’ performances. Special things take wing in Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen, and again in Wir müssen durch viel Trübsal. Stephen Varcoe’s tired-sounding baritone barely clears Bach’s vocal hurdles in ‘Wo gehest du hin?’, although Gardiner balances the books with a thrilling Sei Lob und Ehr.
