Freiburg Baroque Orchestra - Schubert: Symphonies 3 and 4

Celebrating their 25th anniversary, the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra inject wonderful energy into two Schubert symphonies. Album of the Week, 19 August 2013.

The Freiburg Baroque Orchestra is a relatively youthful ensemble, celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.

This new album shows them injecting some aggressive energy into Schubert's third and fourth symphonies, with the young Spanish conductor Pablo Heras-Casado at the helm. His approach is at once vigorous, dynamic and graceful without a hint of sentimentality. 

The orchestra brings an infectious energy to these familiar works. Listen out particularly for a pulse-raising timpanist to rival the best of them.
