Fabulous recorded sound from Brahms

Accentus follows Equilbey in what is a glorious performance of Brahms' requiem

Composer: Brahms
Repertoire: Requiem
Artists: Accentus/Equilbey
Rating:
4/5
Genre: Choral/Instrumental
Label: Naïve V 4956

The German Requiem’s so-called London version, for small choir and two pianos, has little of the tonal warmth and melting instrumental moments of the grown-up version for chorus and orchestra. But it does highlight the profound connection between words of mourning and music. Laurence Equilbey clearly understands the importance of ‘Tröst’ (comfort) to the German protestant tradition, shaping a reading that never loses touch with the work’s sense of reverence.
