During one of her shows at the beginning of this year in which Catherine Bott explored what made Vienna such a great city for composers, she deliberately left out one of the city’s most famous musical figures in order to devote a full hour tonight to his genius.
The composer in question? Viennese-born Franz Schubert.

Appreciation of Schubert’s music while he was alive was limited to a relatively small circle of admirers in the city, but interest in his work increased significantly following his untimely death. Mendelssohn, Schumann, Liszt, Brahms and others discovered and championed his works. Today, Schubert is ranked among the greatest and most performed composers of all time.
So tonight, Catherine asks: “What makes Schubert one of the greatest ever composers?”
