Saturday Night at the Movies: Saturday 26 October

Howard Goodall introduces a personal selection of his own movie music favourites.

This week, Howard Goodall presents a selection of his own favourite film music, explaining why, as a composer, he particular admires these scores by his contemporaries.

Howard will suggest that when it comes to Howard Shore (pictured), his greatest achievement is arguably not The Lord of the Rings but is instead the music he wrote for the David Cronenberg film, Eastern Promises.

Plus, he proposes that Alexandre Desplat – best known for scores like The Queen and Girl with a Pearl Earring – should actually be most praised for his soundtracks to Afterwards and La Fille du Puisatier.

There'll be plenty of music by 20th century film composers, too, including Richard Addinsell's Goodbye, Mr Chips, Richard Rodney Bennett's Far From the Madding Crowd and Luis Bacalov's Il Postino.

In addition, proof that movie music isn't just a man's world, there will be two outstanding scores by the British film composer Rachel Portman.
