Alex James's Date Night - Saturday 9 May 2015, 5pm

Alex James takes a look at all the classical music anniversaries in the week ahead, including the 50th birthday of violinist Tasmin Little.

Alex James invites you to join him for another whistle-stop tour through the week ahead in classical music, as he picks out all the most important dates, anniversaries and ‘on this day’ events.

Tonight’s programme includes a celebration of the world-famous Swedish mezzo soprano Anne Sofie von Otter, born 60 years ago today.  Looking ahead over the rest of the week, Alex uncovers money troubles for Wagner, encounters a famous French composer embroiled in a libel case, and celebrates the reopening of the famous La Scala opera house in Milan in May 1946, after the original building was bombed during the Second World War.

There will also be 50 birthday candles on the cake for the acclaimed English violinist Tasmin Little, pictured; and we find out why a member of the Polish nobility awarded a 15-year-old Frederic Chopin with a diamond ring, 190 years ago this week.

And Alex recounts the story of the soprano who instigated a number of lawsuits against the French composer Gounod for libel, attempting to sue him for £10,000.
