Alex James's Date Night - Saturday 23 August 2014, 7pm

Alex James asks why was Chopin unhappy in Manchester on this week in 1848?

Alex James continues to explore all the important dates, 'on this day' events and anniversaries in the classical music world.

For example, on 25 August 1848, Chopin (pictured) travelled to Manchester for a concert. The journey took eight hours and the composer arrived exhausted at Crumpsall House, where he was the guest of a local wealthy businessman. He was then shocked to find an audience of 1200 awaiting him at the Gentlemen's Concert Hall. How did the concert go? Alex reveals all.

Alex also celebrates the premiere of Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance March No.4 on 24 August 1907, before going on to ask why, exactly, Prokofiev found himself in a tricky situation with US immigration officials on this day in 1918.

There's also a wedding for Wagner, a birthday for Bernstein, and the 85th anniversary of the premiere of Gershwin's An American in Paris.
