Alex James's Date Night - Saturday 20 December, 7pm

Alex James has all the most important anniversaries, birthdays and 'on this day' events in the classical music world for the week ahead.

Tonight Alex begins by raising a glass to one of the world's finest pianists, Dame Mitsuko Uchida, who was born on this day in 1948. Uchida is renowned for her interpretations of Mozart, Schubert, Schumann and Beethoven, both in the concert hall and on record, but she has also illuminated the music of Berg, Schoenberg, Webern and Boulez for a new generation of listeners.

Alex will also be marking the premieres of Schubert's Rosamunde and Mozart's Violin Concerto No.5, and telling the story of a rather important operation for Beethoven.

Looking ahead over the rest of the week, there'll be 70th birthday celebrations for the American conductor Michael Tilson Thomas, alongside an anniversary for John Tavener and an appearance from the tenor Ian Bostridge – who'll be turning 50 on Christmas Day.
