Classic FM Partner Orchestras Week: Royal Northern Sinfonia

The Full Works Concert, Monday 2 June 2014 8pm-10pm

Tonight Jane Jones begins a series of four concerts celebrating a few of Classic FM's partner orchestras around the United Kingdom.

The Royal Northern Sinfonia - Classic FM's orchestra in the North-East of England - is the UK's only full-time chamber orchestra, with a distinctive reputation for its fresh-thinking and versatility.

Founded in 1958, the Northern Sinfonia had the title of ‘Royal’ bestowed by HM The Queen upon it in 2013 – the first time any UK orchestra had been so honoured for more than two decades. It has worked with many of the world's most in-demand artists including the conductors Sir Mark Elder and Yannick Nezet-Seguin, the violinist Gidon Kremer, and singer Ian Bostridge. Aside from its residency at Sage Gateshead, the orchestra takes regular opportunities to collaborate with artists from other genres - most famously among them Sting and Pet Shop Boys.

The Royal Northern Sinfonia is also committed to educational outreach, working with adults and young people alike whilst its individual members play a key role coaching and mentoring for Sage Gateshead’s Young Musicians Programme and In Harmony project.

Tonight, the Royal Northern Sinfonia plays great music from Mozart, Britten, Finzi, Schubert, and Wagner.
