The Full Works Concert - Thursday 9 October, 8pm

Catherine Bott presents a splendid concert including works by Brahms, Smetana and less well-known works by Jeremiah Clarke and Louis Spohr.

Some say Thursday is the new Friday - so Catherine Bott gets the party started tonight with the overture to Smetana’s comic masterpiece, The Bartered Bride. It tells the story of how, after a late surprise revelation, true love prevails over the combined efforts of ambitious parents and a scheming marriage broker. The overture, often performed as a concert piece independently from the opera, was, unusually, composed before almost any of the other music had been written.

Catherine will also have the Jeremiah Clarke trumpet suite from which The Prince of Denmark’s March is taken; the blockbuster Piano Concerto No.2 by Johannes Brahms, played by the brilliant Stephen Hough; and a splendid symphony from one of Beethoven’s contemporaries, Louis Spohr.
