Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about Classical Music, Sunday 20 December 2015, 9pm
Catherine Bott explores another of the classic stories that graces TV schedules and theatres during this time of year.
Tonight it’s the turn of J.M.Barrie’s immortal tale of Peter Pan, the boy who never grew up.
Being ‘born’ at the very beginning of the cinema era, there are plenty of screen adaptations to enjoy, including John Williams’s music to Hook (pictured); Disney’s animated version; James Newton Howard’s score for the 2003 film; and the very recent Pan, with music by John Powell.
There are also stage versions from the likes of Leonard Bernstein and Shakespeare in Love composer Stephen Warbeck.
J.M.Barrie himself was played on film by Johnny Depp in Finding Neverland, and Barrie's other famous play The Admirable Crichton was scored by Richard Addinsell. Catherine has music from both tonight.
And the author also acted as story consultant for Laurence Oliver’s film of Shakespeare’s As You Like It in 1936, and we’ll hear William Walton’s music for that as well.
