Classic FM's Night At The Movies concert, with Sky Movies, took place at London's Cadogan Hall last Sunday. In tonight's show, Howard introduces the evening's spectacular performances by the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra of music from such films as The Artist, Back To The Future and Pirates Of The Caribbean.
Also tonight: From Star Trek to Basic Instinct, via The Omen and L.A. Confidential, Howard looks at the life and legacy of one of cinema’s most extraordinary and influential composers. Jerry Goldsmith (1929-2004) was nominated for six Grammy Awards, nine Golden Globes, four BAFTA awards, and 17 Oscars. In 1977, he won the Academy Award for his score for The Omen.
Goldsmith cited such modern masters as Stravinsky, Copland, Bartók, and Alban Berg as influences on his music. In the world of film soundtracks, there are few composers who were so experimental in their instrumentation, their use of sampled real sounds and electronics.
