Saturday Night at the Movies - Saturday 27 June 2015, 5pm
Tonight, Andrew Collins pays tribute to movie maestro James Horner who died earlier this week, and also explores the world of movie musicals.
There's a different theme every Saturday on Classic FM’s weekly celebration of cinema, with recent shows focusing on westerns, animation and composer-director partnerships.
In the second half of tonight's show Andrew pays tribute to the double Oscar winning composer James Horner who died earlier this week. Andrew will be celebrating Horner's greatest scores including some of his early successes, such as Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, along with his popular collaborations with director James Cameron – Titanic, Avatar and Aliens – and his long-standing working partnership with director Ron Howard, selecting music from Cocoon, Apollo 13 and A Beautiful Mind. There'll also be the first ever radio play of Horner's most recent completed score Southpaw, a new boxing drama starring Jake Gyllenhaal.
But the show starts in the world of musicals. Andrew always invites listeners to get in touch with genres that they’d like him to shine a spotlight on, and this week he’s selected the suggestion of Emma Williams in Cambridgeshire, who loves musicals. Listen out for versions of favourites from The Sound of Music, West Side Story and The Wizard of Oz, and interesting arrangements of much-loved hits from Les Miserables and Frozen.
