The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic has announced a new partnership, with Sky Arts.
Sky Arts will broadcast two documentaries about the RLPO’s Mahler Edition concert series with Chief Conductor Vasily Petrenko.
The RLPO, Classic FM’s Orchestra in North-West England, is celebrating the 150th anniversary of Mahler’s birth this year and 100th anniversary of his death next year with a two-year exploration of his entire orchestral output. The series also includes recitals of other Mahler works and pieces by Schumann, Beethoven, Schubert and Bach in their Mahler editions.
Sky Arts filmed the RLPO during rehearsals for the first concert of the series, which featured Mahler’s Symphony No.1, for a 10-minute documentary entitled Sky Arts at the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic. The film will be broadcast on Sky Arts on dates throughout February and is also available to view online. Aside from clips of rehearsals, the documentary also includes interviews with Vasily Petrenko, Executive Director Andrew Cornall and orchestra members.
Sky Arts will broadcast a second, longer documentary on the Mahler Edition series later in the year, coinciding with a season of programmes on the channels around Mahler’s anniversaries.
Michael Eakin, Chief Executive of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, said of the partnership: “Sky Arts' commitment means we now have the opportunity to bring the acclaimed and much talked-about partnership between our musicians and Vasily Petrenko here in Liverpool direct into the homes of Sky’s millions of viewers.”
