The Full Works Concert - Wednesday 5 February 2014: Great British Performers

The violinist Nicola Benedetti and the cellist Steven Isserlis feature among the Great British Performers tonight.

Our week of Great British Performers continues with the brilliant young Scottish violinist Nicola Benedetti. She plays Vivaldi's Violin Concerto in D with Christian Curnyn conducting the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.

As a pianist Imogen Cooper is particularly known for her classical and romantic repertoire, but she has also been involved in modern music, giving numerous world premières. Tonight we hear her playing Mozart's Piano Concerto No.18 in Bb major.

A choral interlude follows with the Choir of King's College Cambridge singing William Byrd's Ave verum corpus.

Steven Isserlis is one of today's leading cellists, in demand as a soloist and chamber musician around the world. We hear Schumann's Cello Concerto in A minor with Isserlis being joined by the German Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Christoph Eschenbach.

The harpsichordist and conductor, Trevor Pinnock hails from Canterbury and is best known for his association with the period-performance orchestra The English Concert which he helped found and directed from the keyboard for more than 30 years in baroque and early classical music. Tonight they play Arcangelo Corelli's Concerto Grosso No.2 in F major.

One of today's top saxophonists John Harle ends tonight's concert with a piece from a composer who he has collaborated with over decades, Michael Nyman. 'Where the Bee Dances' also has Ivor Bolton conducting the Bournemouth Sinfonietta.
