The Full Works Concert - Wednesday 1 October, 8pm

Mahler's Symphony No. 5 is the thrilling climax to tonight's concert of musical anniversaries.

Jane Jones has another feast of musical anniversaries on the Full Works Concert tonight, as she celebrates Paul Dukas and Vladimir Horowitz, both born on this day.

Gustav Mahler became a student at the University of Vienna on 1 October 1877, studying with Anton Bruckner among others. Jane plays Mahler’s Symphony No.5 marking a new phase in his musical training. After its premiere, Mahler is reported to have said, 'Nobody understood it. I wish I could conduct the first performance fifty years after my death.'
