David Mellor - Sunday 26 October 2014, 7pm

This evening, David Mellor is celebrating the 70th birthday of celebrated Brazilian Pianist, Nelson Friere.

Nelson Freire began playing the piano when he was just three years old. For his first public recital at the age of four, he chose Mozart's Sonata in A major.

In 1957 when he was 12, he performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 and was awarded 7th place at the Rio de Janeiro International Piano Competition. He then left for Vienna to study.

Freire's international career began in 1959 with recitals and concerts in major European cities, as well as the USA, Central and South America, Japan and Israel.

He has worked with most of today's greatest conductors and has made guest appearances with many leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Royal Concertgebouw and the LSO.

Also an award-winning recording artist, Freire's performances are well worth discovering. Tonight David Mellor picks the very best that are available.
