David will be telling the story of how Southbank Centre became one of our most important cultural treasures, home to resident orchestras including the Philharmonia and the London Philharmonic.
There'll be stunning recordings including Sir Thomas Beecham (pictured) in 1954 conducting at the 89th birthday of Sibelius, Sir Charles Mackerras conducting the Philharmonia in Schubert's Ninth Symphony, and Herbert von Karajan with the Berlin Philharmonic playing Beethoven in 1982.
Among the legendary pianists who feature tonight are Willhelm Kempf playing Schubert in June 1969 at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, and the 1982 return to Britain of Vladimir Horrowitz.
