The Classic FM Chart - 13 April 2014
Of seven new entries, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic storm into the chart at No. 3 with Shostakovich.
Vasily Petrenko and the RLPO - Classic FM's orchestra in North-West England - have the highest of this week's seven new entries in the Chart - with Shostakovich's Symphony No. 14.
The composer originally intended to write an oratorio and set 11 poems on the theme of mortality, and in particular early or unjust death, for two solo singers accompanied by strings and percussion. He described it as 'a fight for the liberation of humanity... a great protest against death, a reminder to live one's life honestly, decently, nobly...'
Also entering the Chart at No. 6 is a reconstruction of how Mozart's Requiem would have sounded at its first performance, played by the Dunedin Consort.
