The Full Works Concert - Tuesday 30 December, 8pm
As 2014 draws to a close, Lucy Coward presents the second of two Full Works Concerts which look back on the best classical releases of 2014.
In tonight's Full Works Concert, Lucy Coward - sitting in for Catherine Bott - showcases a recent recording of Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings by the London Symphony Orchestra String Ensemble.
The brilliant young Chinese pianist Ji Liu plays Debussy’s Suite Bergamasque. He was born in Shanghai, started playing the piano at the age of 3, studied in some of the world's most distinguished music conservatoires and has earned an enviable reputation as one of the most promising pianists of his generation.
The concert ends with the Violin Concerto by Sibelius. Both dramatic and deeply romantic, the recording features the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Sir Andrew Davis, joined iby Jennifer Pike, pictured, one of the finest violinists performing today. In 2002, she became the youngest-ever winner of the Young Musician of the Year at the age of 12, and later the youngest major prize-winner in the Yehudi Menuhin International Violin Competition. Now she brings flair, passion and a burgeoning maturity to Sibelius' great concerto.
