David Mellor - Sunday 4 October 2015, 7pm

Tonight David Mellor welcomes the new academic year and celebrates a significant birthday for one of America’s great pianists.

David Mellor makes the most of Fresher’s Week by digging deep into his satchel and finding music connected to studying.

There’s Brahms’s Academic Festival Overture and music from the Choir of Christ Church College, Cambridge.

David also celebrates the 75th birthday of the fine American pianist, Stephan Kovacevich. He made his concert debut as a pianist at the age of 11; then, at the age of 18 he moved to London to study under Dame Myra Hess on a scholarship and has been a London resident ever since. As a soloist and conductor, he has frequently performed and recorded works by, amongst others, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms and Bartók.

In addition to being one of the leading and most acclaimed Lieder singers performing today, Christian Gerhaher is also a highly sought-after performer on the opera stage. Tonight David plays some tracks from his new album of arias from the operas of Mozart. The album features all the big baritone arias from Mozart’s most well-known operas and also includes a recording of Symphony No. 36 in C Major.
