Who are the greatest heroes on screen?
The movies have often depicted heroism in wartime, but also the noble deeds of everyday heroes.
To mark the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings, Howard Goodall is dedicating this week's show to heroism on screen.
Heroism in times of war brings us, among other great themes, the music to Band of Brothers by Michael Kamen, 'Hymn to the Fallen' from Saving Private Ryan by John Williams, and Ron Goodwin's score for Where Eagles Dare.
But heroism is not exclusively confined to conflict. So Howard also reflects on the noble lawyer Atticus Finch defending an innocent man in To Kill A Mockingbird, Jeremy Irons taking on the Vatican as Father Gabriel in The Mission, and the trials and tribulations of Solomon Northup in 12 Years A Slave.
