15th November 2017 marks a significant day in the classical music calendar – it’s the 75th birthday of one of the world’s most respected and prolific musicians: Daniel Barenboim.
And we're giving you the chance to win a 46-CD box-set of his recordings right here! Enter now >
Classic FM is celebrating the great conductor and pianist by playing his finest recordings throughout his birthday, starting with an all-Barenboim Classic FM Hall of Fame Hour with John Suchet at 9am.
Then at 8pm, in The Full Works Concert, Jane Jones surveys his remarkable career with two hours of monumental recordings.
The concert opens with Barenboim at the piano, sharing the spotlight with one of his great friends – and another legend of the classical world – Vladimir Ashkenazy. The concert then features Schubert’s Symphony No.9 (’The Great’), performed by the orchestra with which Barenboim has enjoyed a close artistic relationship for over 50 years: the Berlin Philharmonic.
There will also be music by Sibelius, played by an ensemble Barenboim co-founded in 1999 to promote understanding and unity, with a hope to pave the way for a peaceful solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict – the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra. The concert will also touch on the musical and emotional partnership that Barenboim had with cellist Jaqueline du Pré.
And don’t miss Charlotte Green’s exclusive interview with the great conductor about the music of Elgar, his thoughts on the piano and his career as both a player and a conductor.
