American composer and conductor Eric Whitacre has just unveiled his groundbreaking Virtual Choir project, a unique online experiment that sees hundreds of people from all over the world singing in unison via videos submitted on YouTube.
Not content with redefining the choir, Whitacre is also currently hard at work on a number of contrasting projects. He is collaborating with Hans Zimmer on the next Pirates of the Caribbean film, writing a new piece for Julian Lloyd Webber’s 60th birthday, and also leading a competition to mark the anniversary of Abbey Road studios.
Eric took some time out of his hectic schedule to talk us through all these projects and explain how his passion for encouraging creativity in everyone he meets informs much of his work.
