CD of the week: New Year's Concert 2009 - Barenboim

The beginning of January was the recording of the New Year's Concert 2009 in Vienna, conducted by Daniel Barenboim.

The New Year's Concert in Vienna has been a tradition for over six decades.  It's viewed on television by tens of millions of people all over the world - and this year, it was conducted by Daniel Barenboim for the first time.

Barenboim's debut as a conductor of the Vienna Phil took place in 1989, and he's been a regular guest with the orchestra ever since.

The New Year's Day Concert recording is always swiftly turned around - and this year is no exception.  This CD includes many of the Strauss family's favourite music - By the Beautiful Blue Danube, the Radetsky March - alongside rarely-heard but thoroughly uplifting Viennese classics.
