Natalie Dessay’s voice is as distinctive as they come these days, a high, bell-clear but unusually colourful coloratura soprano, with apparently no limits to its virtuosity. She swoops and soars her way through these heady Strauss extracts, equally at home in the filigree arabesquing of Zerbinetta’s aria from Ariadne auf Naxos and the pure cantilena of Sophie in the sublime Rosenkavalier trio. Top class support from Lott, Kirschlager, Koch, Allen and Pappano completes a glorious disc.
