For his third album on Deutsche Grammophon’s iconic yellow label, the brilliant 20-year old Canadian pianist Jan Lisiecki tackles Schumann’s complete concert works for piano and orchestra, including the evergreen Piano Concerto in A minor.
It also includes the rarely heard Introduction and Allegro, which has never before been recorded by Deutsche Gramophone in their 117 year history.
Lisiecki’s account of these works, with their demanding variety of expression and intimate dialogue between soloist and orchestra, is extraordinarily mature and subtle for one so young. His playing is virtuosic, but also always undemonstrative and perfectly blended with the orchestra.
Throughout Lisiecki is accompanied by the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia and Sir Antonio Pappano. They have performed the Schumann concerto together before, particularly during a five-concert European tour in which Lisiecki alternated as soloist with Martha Argerich. Now, as then, their partnership is an extraordinarily successful one and their rapport evident.
