Alan Titchmarsh's Great British Discovery
Parry - best-known for 'Jerusalem' and 'I was Glad' - received an unusual commission from Helen, Countess of Radnor, who lived in Longford Castle near Salisbury (pictured). "She was unique in many ways," says Alan, "but perhaps most intriguing was her insistence on doing things that were not normally viewed as acceptable practice for a Victorian lady - one of these was commissioning works for orchestra which she then conducted herself!"
