Fauré overwhelmed by singers
With so many different singers taking the reigns in this collection of Fauré complete songs the results are rather patchy
Repertoire: The complete songs, Vol.3
Artists: Various artists
Label: Hyperion CDA67335
This is a mixed bag, mainly because so many singers are involved, not all of them capturing to best advantage Fauré’s elusive soundworld. The finest is Jean-Paul Fouchécourt, a high, soft tenor who lights on precisely the necessary finesse to unify Fauré’s subtleties of emotion and harmony. Beside him, a couple of the others seem to descend into earnest warbling. Great piano playing, though; the duet arrangement of the Shylock incidental music is an unexpected highlight.
