The celebrated composer and a recipient of multiple Oscars for his film scores has died of a heart attack.
John Barry has died of a heart attack, aged 77. The York-born composer was famous for his work on Dances With Wolves, Born Free and Midnight Cowboy, among countless other Hollywood scores.
His groundbreaking work saw him scoop five Oscars, including Best Original Score for Born Free in 1967, Out Of Africa in 1986 and Dances With Wolves in 1991. Last year, Classic FM listeners also made him one of the most popular film composers in our Movie Music Chart, voting 5 of his compositions into the top 100.
Tributes to Barry have already began pouring in with fellow-composer David Arnold tweeting, "It is with a heavy heart that I tell you that John Barry passed away this morning."
“I am profoundly saddened by the news but profoundly thankful for everything he did for music and for me personally.”
