Giordano's thrilling historical drama opens Opera North's winter season.
The Winter Season arrives at Opera North with a dramatic new production of Giordano’s passionate tragedy Andrea Chénier, alongside the welcome revival of two much-loved favourites: Mozart’s Così fan tutte and Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore. The season opens at Leeds Grand Theatre on 19 January 2016 before touring to three of the North’s most prestigious venues in March: Theatre Royal Newcastle, Theatre Royal Nottingham and The Lowry, Salford Quays.
Andrea Chénier
Political upheaval, memorable arias and enduring love provide a stirring start to the new year as Giordano’s Andrea Chénier is brought to Opera North for the first time by Annabel Arden. Taking the life of the French poet André Chénier as its inspiration, the opera explores love and the individual at the time of the French Revolution before charting the rapid descent of hope and optimism into the Terror. Combining a dramatic storyline with compelling music, this new production looks set to become an unforgettable addition to the Company’s repertoire.
