The genius of Lorin Maazel

The French conductor, Lorin Maazel passed away last month at the age of 84. 

He had conducted his whole life - making his debut at the age of just nine – and this week David Mellor pays tribute to him, exploring why he gave his life to being on the podium.

Highlights include Mahler's Symphony No.6 with the Philharmonia, Stravinsky's Firebird finale with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra and Johann Strauss Jr's Pizzicato Polka from the Vienna Philharmonic's New Years Day Concert in 2005.
