Before Christie and Les Arts Florissants, few modern ears had heard French Baroque music, beyond the Eurovision Song Contest fanfare. Strong emotions and energy lie at the heart of Christie’s interpretations of four of Campra’s 51 dramatic grands motets, works written during the early 1700s for the French Chapel Royal. Sample the chorus De caelo auditum, complete with its description of God’s wrath, for a flavour of the vivid word-painting.
