Alex James's Date Night - Saturday 30 May 2015, 7pm

Alex James invites you to join him on another journey through the important dates in history for the classical music world this week.

Victoria Albert Mendelssohn

On this week's show, Alex marks the world premiere on this day of Smetana’s Bartered Bride, finds out how Michael Haydn usurped Mozart, and how Mendelssohn led Queen Victoria in a singalong around the piano at Buckingham Palace (pictured).

Looking further ahead, Alex features one of Mozart’s most enduring works, the Sinfonia Concertante for violin and viola, and celebrates the marriage of John Field - the ‘inventor’ of the Nocturne.  The debut at Covent Garden of a certain young Italian tenor, Luciano Pavarotti is also marked in this evening’s programme.

Alex also lights the birthday candles for two great British musical figures: conductor Sir Mark Elder and composer Sir Edward Elgar.
