Alex James's Date Night - Saturday 27 September 2014, 7pm

There's a host of classical music birthdays to celebrate this evening - as well as a few fascinating anniversaries.

This week, Alex James raises a glass to the young British violinist Chloe Hanslip (pictured) – celebrating her 27th birthday today.

He also discovers why Mozart was in such a rush to finish The Magic Flute on this day in 1791.

Looking ahead over the week to come, Alex features music by Louis Spohr - who had a rather public falling-out with his orchestra's management in September 1819 - and marks the birth of the extraordinary pianist Vladimir Horowitz on 1st October 1903.

There are further birthday celebrations for tenor Alfie Boe and conductor Michel Plasson, as well as the anniversary of the very first time Leonard Bernstein conducted the New York Philharmonic Orchestra as their new music director in October 1958.
