Internet rumours have set classical tongues wagging today with the 'revelation' that Dame Edna Everage is set to join the cast of La Fille du Regiment.
Confusion surrounds the Royal Opera House's production of Donizetti's comic opera next April, amid reports the Australian star is to be named as part of the cast. The other actors in the show have all been announced, except for the role of Duchesse de Crackentop. According to Intermezzo, two 'fairly reliable' sources have revealed that Dame Edna will be starring in that role.
However, Intermezzo has also revealed that another 'reliable source' has contradicted this information. Opera magazine have also waded in with their take on events, tweeting earlier: "News in from the Royal Opera House press office, apparently the news re Dame Edna is sadly not true - missing a trick?'
According to the Royal Opera House website, the role of Duchesse de Crackentop is still 'TBC'.
We'll have to wait and see if this turns out to be true or whether Intermezzo should invest in new sources!
