Joyce DiDonato talks trousers and skirts

Mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato is celebrating Valentine’s Day with the UK release of her latest album Diva Divo.

DiDonato is hot property: since winning the Gramophone Artist of the Year Award in September she’s been starring in Dead Man Walking at Houston Grand Opera. Now she’s in the middle of a US recital tour, which culminates in her main stage recital debut at Carnegie Hall.

Diva Divo came together when DiDonato realised that many stories could be sung happily within her range both from the male and female perspectives, or as she puts it, the album mixes trouser and skirt arias from the same opera or story.

Bob Jones caught up with Joyce just after her Houston appearances.
