creative:space, Sevenoaks
The Knole Academy, Sevenoaks - Create launched creative:space in 2005 following extensive and ongoing consultation with disability organisations and families with disabled children. The events have been designed specifically for disabled children, their siblings and adult family members, who often find it difficult to attend traditional music events because the disabled child’s behaviour is deemed ‘inappropriate’ or ‘disruptive’.
In particular, they are tailored to the needs of children with communication, learning or sensory integration difficulties (these include autism, Asperger’s syndrome, dyspraxia, dyslexia, various speech/language disorders, Down’s syndrome, cerebral palsy, ADHD).
The format is informal, with seating around tables supplied with colouring and craft activities. Carefully selected music is performed by Create’s professional musicians, often including musical savant, pianist Derek Paravicini who is blind and has severe learning difficulties. Create’s workshop leader encourages the families’ involvement through interactive activities including singing, dancing and movement.
Times: Morning event: 11.45am- 1pm. Afternoon event: 2.45pm-4pm
Price: Adults £6, Children £4. Under 5s go free.
