Listen again to this show

This week David Mellor celebrates the great British conductor Sir Malcolm Sargent, with a two-hour tribute to his career at the podium.

David examines how Sir Malcolm became a renowned choirmaster as well as a fine symphonic conductor with a range of historic recordings.

These include his 1952 take on 'Rule Britannia' with the Philharmonia, recordings from his time leading the Vienna Philharmonic in Sibelius's Karelia suite, and the Royal Philharmonic for Beethoven's Symphony No.3 ‘Eroica' – a personal favourite of the conductor.
