“O for the wings, for the wings of a dove! Far away, far away would I rove! In the wilderness build me a nest, and remain there for ever at rest.” This moment from Mendelssohn’s 1844 anthem ‘Hear my Prayer’ became well-known the world over from a gramophone recording made in 1927 by boy soprano Ernest Lough. The words are by William Bartholomew, who also collaborated with Mendelssohn on his oratorio Elijah.
