Best known for its Latin refrain – “Gloria (strung out over several bars), Hosanna in excelsis!” – this French tune dates back to the 1500s but the words by bell-ringing enthusiast and Anglican priest-cum-composer, George Woodward, came much later; the Carol was first published in 1924.
