The 2014 Swansea Festival of Music & The Arts celebrates the centenary of Dylan Thomas’s birth with the performance of a piece composed by fellow local boy Karl Jenkins.

Running from 4-18 October, with visits from some of the world’s greatest musicians and international orchestras, this year’s event is set to be spectacular.

The Philharmonia Orchestra, conducted by Christoph von Dohnanyi, is performing at the Brangwyn Hall as part of the Swansea Festival of Music and the Arts on 4 October. The programme includes Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto with soloist Franz Peter Zimmermann and Beethoven's 5th Symphony.

The Russian State Philharmonic Orchestra performs in the Brangwyn Hall as part of the Swansea Festival of Music and the Arts on 18 October.

The programme opens with Llareggub, a commissioned work by Karl Jenkins, celebrating his 70th birthday and the centenary of Dylan Thomas’s birth. Both are Swansea-born artists who have attained international fame.

The piece evokes the atmosphere of the mythical village setting of Thomas's iconic play for voices Under Milk Wood. The concert will also include Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 3 with Peter Donohoe as soloist.
