Oscars 2015 winners: Alexandre Desplat wins Best Original Score

French composer Alexandre Desplat has won an Oscar for Best Original Score, beating off competition from Hans Zimmer.

Alexandre Desplat has won the Best Original Score for The Grand Budapest Hotel. In his speech he dedicated the award to his wife, a violinist, saying "You made everything happen for me."

Desplat's score for The Imitation Game had also been nominated. The Frenchman also beat off competition from fellow nominees Hans Zimmer for Interstellar, Gary Yershon for Mr Turner and Johann Johannsson for The Theory of Everything.

During the star-studded ceremony, Eddie Redmayne won the Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything and Birdman took the coveted award for Best Picture. Julianne Moore took the Best Actress gong for her role in Still Alice and Alejandro G Inarritu won Best Director for Birdman.

Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel also won the awards for Best Make-up and Hair and Best Costume Design.

It was the first time Alexander Desplat has been nominated for two awards, having been nominated six times in previous years. He's told Classic FM about the chemistry he has with The Grand Budapest Hotel's director Wes Anderson: 

Best Original Song went to 'Glory' from the film Selma. John Legend collected the award and said "Nina Simone said it was an artist's duty to reflect the times we live. Selma may be 50 years ago, but it is now, because the struggle for justice is right now".

Best Animated Short Film: Feast
Best Visual Effects: Interstellar 
Best Supporting Actress: Patricia Arquette, Boyhood
Best Sound Editing: American Sniper 
Best sound mixing: Whiplash
Best foreign film: Ida 
Best supporting actor: JK Simmons, Whiplash
