The soundtrack to James Bond film Skyfall and its composer Thomas Newman has won the BAFTA for Best Original Music.

Newman, who was working on a Bond film for the first time, beat competition from previous BAFTA winners John Williams and Alexandre Desplat. Other nominees included Mychael Danna for Life of Pi and Dario Marianelli for Anna Karenina.

Newman's award was the second of the night for Skyfall, after the movie landed the BAFTA for Outstanding British Film.

The composer previously won the same award for his score to American Beauty in 2000, a film also directed by Skyfall director Sam Mendes.
